The Hans Theo Richter Prize is awarded by the Saxon Academy of Arts for significant achievements in the visual arts, especially in drawing and graphic arts, and carries prize money of €20,000. It is funded by the Hildegard and Hans Theo Richter Foundation.

The Hans Theo Richter Prize has been presented since 1998. In 2017, it was awarded to Marlene Dumas, an artist working in Amsterdam.

Whereas the first winner, Max Uhlig, was chosen personally by Hildegard Richter, subsequent prize-winners have been selected by a jury consisting of fellows from the visual arts class, the board of trustees of the Hildegard and Hans Theo Richter Foundation, and the director of the Collection of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at Dresden State Art Collections. When the award was presented for the tenth time in 2014, an exhibition featuring works by all the previous winners was held at the Leonhardi Museum in Dresden. A catalogue was published to tie in with the exhibition.
